Me and my girlfriend are looking to enjoy this years fat tuesday celebrations. were are wondering what the pet policy is. we would love to bring our dogs to the celebration are there any rules against it?
Dogs at Mardi Gras 2009
I wouldn%26#39;t. The Quarter is crowded, loud and has more than a few inebriated people on that particular day. On the parade routes, a little less drunk but still a bit much for a pup!
Having said that, there are no rules against it. You%26#39;re free to make the decision.

I would NOT recommend that you even entertain the thought of bringing your pet to the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.
I am assuming that you are speaking specifically about Mardi Gras Day, and in the French Quarter.
On the other hand, if you wish to attend one of the subsequent parade gatherings in the berbs, and would keep them leashed, and remain to the rear of the crowd and away from the kids, then you might get by.
Other than that scenario, I would completely stay away from the crowds in the French Quarter, especially the Mardi Gras Day crowd with my pets.
The risk is too great that they could bite someone and you would not want this misery.
Please do NOT bring your dog to Mardi Gras!!!
The Louisiana SPCA just sent out an e-mail on this very subject, explaining why this is a bad idea. They note the large crowds can be very frightening and stressful to a dog. Many participants are quite impaired and will not see your dog and it can be easily injured. Moreover, there is a TON of garbage in the street with all many of choking and health hazards for a dog. Lastly, they recommend you get down on all fours and walk around for a minute at Mardi Gras and see how much you like it.
Do Barkus if you like, otherwise leave your dog at home!!
I re-read that e-mail from the SPCA and they state that there actually is an ordinance that prohibits a pet from being within 200 yards of a parade route one hour before, during and one hour after a parade. It didn%26#39;t indicate whether that was in Orleans or Jefferson or both.
I didn%26#39;t know of the ordinance but it%26#39;s probably a good idea. I don%26#39;t remember seeing dogs along the parade route, either as a spectator or as a float rider!
What about non-mardi gras time--- just a weekend in April?
How dog friendly is the city? We are interested in bringing our dogs for a weekend. Not super dog crazy, but like long walks with them to check things out.
Just before Mardi Gras...next year, Sunday, February 7th is a WONDERFUL dog Mardi Gras parade called The Mystic Krewe of Barkus. For a fee, which is a donation to the LASPCA, your dogs can be in the parade. Every year there is a different theme....Lifestyles of the -itch %26amp; Famous, Joan of Bark, Tailtanic, the Bark Knight, etc. All of the dogs are in costume. Anyway, this would be a terrific event for you and your dogs...and the BEST part is...you get an opportunity to give back.
