Price of street cars in New Orleans

I will probably only have a day to see the Garden District on our trip and would like to ride a streetcar there. Where do I buy tokens or tickets? Can we buy just a one way fare? Is there a visitors center either in that area or in the French Quarter where we could pick up a self-guided tour map of the Garden District? We were considering taking a taxi after walking the area back to the French Quarter. Any idea on how much that would cost?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The street car is $1.25 per person and you will need exact change. You just pay per ride, no tokens necessary. I would just take the streetcar to and from the Garden District instead of taking a cab. If you are going to spend a day in the Garden District, I highly recommend lunch at Commanders Palace. They had pamphlets inside the restaurant for self guided walking tours. You can also print out self guided walking tours from Frommers website.

This may help:

Go to www.norta.com and click on FARES in the left hand column.

As mentioned, it%26#39;s $1.25. You can give the conductor $2.00 if that%26#39;s all you have. You%26#39;ll just get nothing back! :-) Also, the buses and streetcars do take bills so you don%26#39;t need $1.25 in quarters, for instance.

$1.25 per person. Bills or change, no credit cards, pay as you get on board. It makes no difference if you ride 1 mile or 5 miles. Transfers are 50cents, but they are a little bit tricky. However, if you get on the street car on Canal St. %26amp; St. Charles, it%26#39;s a direct ride and you won%26#39;t need a transfer.

Just ask the conductor to let you off at Jackson Ave. (It%26#39;s a large intersection with Chase Bank at the corner.) Then, everything south of St. Charles (to the river) and north of Magazine St. and everything inside (west/uptown side) of Jackson Ave. before Louisiana Ave is the Garden District. If you look on a map online, you will see easily.

You can also stop in The Rink, a little coffee shop/shopping area with a bookstore and other little shops on Washington and Prytania, just off of St. Charles. They have an $8 self-guided tour book, which makes a nice souvenir. It%26#39;s the skinny green paperback book, and the book store knows it well. Also, many guided tours start at this point and there are signs on the building%26#39;s doors usually with more info on the Prytania St. side. Washington is 1/2 way between Jackson and Louisiana, about 1/2 mile either way.

The visitor%26#39;s center is at 2020 St. Charles, a few blocks before Jackson Ave., but I don%26#39;t know what they have as it is new and it is for the whole city.

All that being said, I live in the Garden District and see many folks taking random enjoyable walks with their cameras through my neighborhood. The homes and gardens are pretty and enjoyable. The sidewalks can be bumpy due to the oak tree roots and other issues, so wear some good walking shoes and just enjoy the rest. If you are coming in the next few weeks, the weather is lovely, but be prepared for rain, of course. And, if you walk to Magazine St., between Washington and Louisiana there are many little inexpensive restaurants, antique shops, and clothing shops to browse. Some of the lunch places are mom%26amp;pop-owned and are very good!! There%26#39;s also a Walgreen%26#39;s there if you need anything emergently at the last minute.

I hope this info is helpful and I really hope you enjoy yourself!

Wow, Lasfloras, great advice, very well done! Thanks, I%26#39;m gonna start my tour exactly as you suggested! Can%26#39;t wait only 19 more days!!
