Hi.
My son, Eric, is planning on accepting an internship at this college this summer. Eric is quiet and not street smart. Is this a safe area? This is my only child and I am a widow.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Louisiana State University-safe area?
I have lived near the LSU campus my entire life. This part of Baton Rouge is considered a safe area but I would not recommend living north of campus off Highland Road. Will he have a car? Is he eligible for on-campus housing? I%26#39;ll be happy to help you with recommendations if needed.

I concur with ILoveLouisiana (so do I, by the way). There%26#39;s activity on the LSU campus at all hours of the day and night. If your son will be housed on campus, everything he needs will be within walking distance, in the complex of shops, stores, entertainment venues, and restaurants just outside the north gate, on Highland Road.
We made a trip to Serrano%26#39;s (a restaurant in this complex)one night a couple of weeks ago, to see Chris LeBlanc perform on the patio. As we were sitting there, listening to Chris in a great venue, with perfect weather, I was noticing the eclectic crowd (ages from the late teens to the mid 60%26#39;s...I%26#39;m 65) and thinking of how much I miss that area.
My brother and I each survived four years there :-)
I recommend staying close to campus or even in the on-campus apartments if they%26#39;re available.
The most dangerous spots are north of campus, btw the college and downtown. Anything on campus or south and east would be fine. Of course, nothing is perfect, and bad stuff can happen is on-campus housing, but the would probably be the best locale for an intern, and you get the socialization aspects too.
I%26#39;ll respectfully disagree that the entire area north of the campus, between the campus and downtown, is dangerous. The first block, which includes The Chimes Restaurant, The Varsity Theater, Serrano%26#39;s restaurant,Raising Cane%26#39;s Chicken Fingers, and some retail shops has crowds almost every night of the week. We visit some of these places on a fairly frequent basis. Granted, after you pass State Street, which is at the end of the first block, the neighborhood deteriorates rather rapidly, but I%26#39;ve never had any safety concerns about that first block.
