first time to baton rouge---what to do?

My friend and I (both female, 30 yrs old) will be visiting St Francisville for a couple of days in April. During the evenings, we will be attending wedding festivities, but we are looking for activities during the day. Can someone recommend some activities? We are all for sightseeing, tours, etc, and willing to drive to Baton Rouge. Thanks for your help!

One more question----what is traffic like in Baton Rouge? Is it easy to get around?

first time to baton rouge---what to do?

Traffic in Baton Rouge on any weekday is horrible between 6AM and 7PM. But it%26#39;s a lot better on the weekends. Although sometimes it can be bad in certain areas (especially on I10 around Bluebonnet Blvd).

As far as sightseeing goes, I%26#39;m not sure. There%26#39;s the USS Kidd battleship downtown on the river, different plantations in the area, and probably some other things. You%26#39;d probably want to look into a swamp tour at Alligator Bayou (http://www.alligatorbayou.com/). I%26#39;ve never done it, but I here it%26#39;s pretty cool. It%26#39;s right on the border of East Baton Rouge parish (southern part).

It is easy to get around Baton Rouge outside the hours of 7-9 and 3:30-6.

As for activities, St. Francisville actually is a neat little town with some great shops and could easily fill at least half a day.

I would consider driving to some of the plantations as well along River Road.

April is a great time to be in south Louisiana! If the St. Francisville ferry is running, you can take it over to New Roads...small town on False River with shops and restaurants. Downtown Baton Rouge has lots of history, state museums, Old and New State Capital, Old Governor%26#39;s Mansion, etc. There is a Visitor%26#39;s Bureau with info. Also lots of fun restaurants. Tsunami on top of the Shaw Center Art Museum would be fun for lunch and would give you a breath-taking view of the Mighty Mississippi.

For shopping, I would recommend Towne Center with several good restaurants (mostly chain..Bonefish Grill, P.F. Chang, Zea Grill (from New Orleans), Carrabba%26#39;s, etc.) Perkins Rowe out Perkins Road at Bluebonnet Blvd. near the Mall of Louisiana (also good) is fun and a little different shopping/eating experience.

Swamp Tour as mentioned earlier is great but you need to call ahead to get times of tours that day. I would not recommend sunset cruise (though great) because you don%26#39;t want to drive back to St. Francisville at night (poorly lighted winding road).

Nottoway Plantation near Donaldsonville is a beautiful plantation with great tour. There are others near St. Francisville (Rosedown, Myrtles, etc.) would be much closer.

Enjoy! Hope you get some boiled crawfish while you%26#39;re in town!
