My wife and I are planning to go to N.O. at the end of May. I have stayed in the FQ on prior occaisions and while it is ';classic New Orleans'; we found that the atmosphere on Bourbon St was a turn-off. Where would be an alternative place to stay that is close to public transportation, i.e. the streetcar and I can find a reasonably priced, romantic, and charming hotel?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Where to stay.
There is definitely more to the French Quarter than Bourbon St, and I%26#39;d give it another shot. Try the Monteleone or Omni Royal Orleans for quintessential The Place d%26#39;Armes and Prince Conti are two reasonably priced Quarter hotels.
Otherwise, try looking for hotels in the Warehouse District or CBD. These are more generic, corporate hotels, but there are some goodies. I like the Renaissance Arts hotel a lot in this area.

Even Bourbon Street changes complexion when you go beyond the 800 block where the bars end. There are several guest houses on this residential end which are nothing like the craziness just blocks away.
Many people like the Esplanade Avenue side of the Quarter as well as the Faubourg Marigny. You can walk to/from the attractions but it%26#39;s pretty quiet.
Depending on your definition of ';reasonable,'; there are a number of B%26amp;Bs in Mid City and Uptown that may fit your criteria.
