Frugal Gourmet Trip Report Part 3

Day 7: Returned the rental car. Went to the cooking school of New Orleans. It%26#39;s conveniently located in the quarter (actually very close to Johnny%26#39;s). The class was enjoyable and amusing and educational; 2 thumbs up. $25 pp. Not hands on, but you do get a lunch out of it.

Shopping in the quarter for souveniers, then back out on the streetcar to Franky and Johnny%26#39;s, a somewhat divey (but comfortable) place well down Magazine, almost to Audubon Park. Soft shell crab (1 thumb), and Briteeyes liked her muffaletta to a surprising degee.

Went to the Rock %26#39;n%26#39; Bowl (the new location) for Zydaco music. Nice venue, big so it%26#39;s cooler. 2 thumbs up.

Day 8: French Quarter Fest. Cafe Beinget for cofe and sweets (1 thumb up), caught the 2nd line parade. Then some Dixieland Jazz, Pete Fountain actually in the band. Went from drinking coffee near his statute to eating a duck po-boy as he played. Po-boy was from Jacques Imo (1 thumb up). Then Preservation Hall to catch the Loose Marbles, a younger jazz combo (2 thumbs up).

Went to Johnny%26#39;s po-boy, split a italian sausage po-boy. 1 thumb up.

Walked the moonwalk to Frnchman St. area. Caught a younger cajun band and ate a beef debris po-boy. Caught a cab from Chico (2 thumbs up); after that it was a mist of changed flights and bags and reports of thundershowers.

Loose Marbles are great! They often spend their summers in NYC, although this year Washington Square Park -- their usual haunt -- is closed for renovations.

Rock %26#39;n%26#39; Bowl has a new location?? Wow....don%26#39;t know how that slipped under my radar. The old funky, vintage bowling alley was a huge part of the R%26#39;n%26#39;B experience, so I have mixed feelings about any ';upgrade.'; Thanks for the heads-up.

I%26#39;m a fan of neighborhood dives, and have always loved Franky %26amp; Johnny%26#39;s. I like to go at the height of crawfish season for boiled crawfish and stuffed artichokes.

Nice that you got to see Pete Fountain. He%26#39;s nearly 80, bless him.

Appreciate your trip report. Thanks for supporting New Orleans.

Frugal Gourmet Trip Report Part 3

What time in the evening did you go to the Rock %26#39;n%26#39; Bowl? We are going to go when we return to New Orleans in June and from what I have read it doesn%26#39;t seem to kick off till about 11 p.m.

The new Rock N Bowl is only a couple blocks from the original location on the other side of the overpass in what appears to be an old paint warehouse or something of that sort (next to Ye Olde College Inn). I miss the old location too, but hopefully it%26#39;ll grow on me!

Fans of Pete Fountain can hear him play a couple nights a week at the Hollywood Casino in Bay St. Louis. Those duck po-boys have become very popular recently although not with me.

We went to rock %26#39;n%26#39; bowl about 11 or maybe 11:30 and the band was playing. The announced time was 10.

Another thing: there are 2 rock %26#39;n%26#39; bowls now, but only one at a time will have bands, alternating. They say.

jhardinseattle: Thanks for the info. I will have to check their website the week before we go to see who%26#39;s playing and where.
