Day trip from New Orleons to Mobile, Alabama

Coming to New Orleans for 5 days in April. We want to rent a car and take drive using the coastal roads from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama and then back to New Orleans same day. Want advice on what to see along the way. Thought of visiting Jefferson Davis House in Biloxi and vist Fort Gaines and Daughin Island in Mobile. Any other must sees?

I%26#39;m a big fan of Bellingrath Gardens in the Mobile area! http://www.bellingrath.org/

I visited a neat Estuarium on Dauphin Island a few years back. http://estuarium.disl.org/

Westchester: Driving from New Orleans to Mobile Ala., approx. 150 miles if you do it alont I-10. If however you elect driving along portions of Hwy 90, it will take a little longer with the decreased speed limits imposed thereon. If you visit the Home of Jefferson Davis, you will need to exit I-10 and head to the coastal route of Hwy 90. This will consume some time.

Bellengrath Gardens is a time consuming spot to visit, and is mostly about what you would expect, the flowers and a history of the home and its former inhabitants. So, I guess what I am saying it there could be some time constraints on how many places you could theoritcally visit during the daylight hours and still get back to NO in a single day.

Are you planning to eat at some point? Just a suggestion....hope your visit is enjoyable.

Mobile is a long day trip from New Orleans, especially when doing the coastal roads. It%26#39;s possible, but it%26#39;s a full day.

If you%26#39;re only in NOLA for 5 days, I%26#39;d spend the time here.

We are really under no time constraints. Plan on leaving early in the morning and do not mind if get back to NO late in the evening. We want to take the coastal route in the morning and take the main highway back to NO on our return. Yes we will need both a lunch and dinner recommendation. The only two places we heard about were Ed%26#39;s Seafood Shed in Spanish Fort, AL and White Cap restaurant in Gulfport. Any suggestions?

Also, there is another reason we are taking this side trip. When our three boys were growing up, we took camping trips (tenting only) into all sections of the country. We visited 41 states with them over the years and my wife and I have since visted two more. Our goal is to visit all 50 states some day. Three states we missed on our travels with the kids were Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. That is why we are taking this trip from NO to Mobile and while there would like to see a few highlights along the way. This will leave five more states - Oregon and Washington (figure trip could fly into Portland and then drive up through Washington state into British Columbia ), Alaska (maybe a cruise up the coast someday), Hawaii (need 2-3 weeks to do this one) and North Dakato (figure fly into Bismark and then drive up to Banff, Alberta Canada). This is a beautiful country we are blessed with - hope all can get out and enjoy it as we have over the years!!!

Westchester: I am certain, that you are able to manipulate the hwy system. You mentioned a rental auto to drive to Mobile. Some rentals have a GPS, which can offer info on restaurants etc, and would be quite an assist to you, in this situation.

Your initial comment stated visiting in April. The trek from NO to Mobile via Hwy 90, would be the back way...it is the coastal road. Before you get to Mobile, which is across Mobile Bay, you will travel across two bridges in LA., and two in MS. All of these are open for travel.

The City of Mobile has a lot of restaurants, some on the coastal route, and others farther inland and North of I-10. I am certain that if you like seafood, there would be many places to choose. I cannot specifically mention any at this time.

I would suggest getting a good breakfast before departing, as ther is not very much on the road to Mobile, until you get to Mississippi%26#39;s coastal area, where there are the usual Casino Buffets and some of the restaurants have re-opened. I am not familiar with any one in particular, but you should visit the Biloxi TA forum, and ask, and those good people will gladly tell you what is the best places to dine and the menu%26#39;s that I am sure are available on line.

You can also do this on the Alabama/Mobile forum.

Well, for your first post on this forum, I hope we have been able to assist, and may your visit be as pleasant as you seem to be.

The jefferson davis home is still being restored from hurricane katrina. I think you may enjoy the beach drive from Bay St louis to Ocean springs. I would get back on I 1-10 to mobile in Ocean Springs. MS gulf coast is still rebuilding and the traffic may be slow some of the way. The beau Rivage is a nice spot for lunch or Emerils in Gulfport. We also enjoy the USS Alabama ship tour in Mobile.

Westchester: You can view beauvoir.org and get the latest on Jefferson Davis%26#39; Home. There is a certain amount of refreshing being performed, as it is a huge undertaking, but you can get on line and view whether or not you want to visit. There is a video for your viewing. Looks good here.
