I am going to New Orleans for a convention next January. Likely that we will be staying at the Marriot Convention Hotel. My husband will be joining me pre or post convention for some personal trip time.
My question, is this Marriot location convenient enough as a base to the FQ, Bourbon St, Warehouse district etc? I understand that this waterfront area is becoming quite an attraction itself?
Any opinions welcome and appreciated.
How convenient is the Convention area to rest of NO?
It%26#39;s not my favorite location but yes, you can use this hotel as a good base. The convention center itself is huge and the Marriott is towards the %26#39;downtown%26#39; side of the center. It%26#39;s 6-7 blocks from Poydras/Canal, maybe 11-12 to Bourbon.

Should we be booking something more central for our ';private time'; then do you think? The convention is pretty demanding, so the Marriot location is a big advantage to me on those days but we could eaily slip in to another area if it was ';worth it'; Thanks much.
Sorry, another question. It there a better choice next to the Convention Centre? Limited old threads on this.
Look into the Renaissance Arts hotel or Hilton Riverside. Two great hotels in the Warehouse District with good proximity to both the Convention Center and French Quarter areas.
Canada: The Marriot location is convenient to the French Quarter and the Warehouse District. I would assume you were, in the case of the Warehouse District, looking for the convenience of a particular restaurant? Emerils has a restaurant on Tchoupitoulas in the 800 block, a far walk perhaps, but a short taxi ride for certain. The food is very good.
The French Quarter would be more convenient from the Marriot than would be the Hilton, as the Hilton is farther away. Also, if you are a gambler, Harrah%26#39;s Casino is in the vicinity to the Marriot.
Bourbon street, in some circles is a must see when visiting the FQ. Certainly at night it has a certain measure of glitz, which completely dissappears in daylight, which also exposes some of the ugly and the dirty. I am by no means being critical of this area of the FQ, as it has its following here on this forum. It is however not one of mine, but if you must see it, I would recommend you do it in the evening with all the glitz.
We also have a riverfront shopping area, which is near the Hilton, and in the FQ, along Decateur St., there are shops and even an area where you can sit on benches and view the mighty Mississippi, with all its pleasantries.
So, bring your walking shoes and remember, here in January is nothing like Winnipeg, however it could be rather chilly so a sweater and a windbreaker will suffice mostly, except if it is raining, which can happen.
There is not much else to the area other than the French Quarter, unless you with to take one of the many tours available, which can be found on one of the sites as bigeasy.com. Therein you can branch out and get as much info as you desire.
You are wise to get involved herein as early as possible, as you will undoubtedly have many more questions as time proceeds.
Until then, hope your planning goes well.
I believe the OP is referring to the Marriott at the Convention Center, which is located at 859 Convention Center Blvd. This location is, as CajunWave noted, approximately 12 blocks from Bourbon St. and is in the Warehouse District (by my definition).
The Hilton Riverside is definitely closer to the French Quarter than the Marriott Convention Center, and only a few blocks from the Convention Center itself. Plus, the Hilton is connected to the Riverwalk Marketplace, with its very own Cafe du Monde branch!
I was referring to the convention centre Marriot, but will rethink the options, now. In any case many thanks for all the advice here. I will look into all the suggestions and appreciate them much. There is nothing like TA for giving you a ';feel'; for the direction you want to go. Many of the comments have put my own preferences in perspective.
Elusive, I am hoping that NO is nothing like winnipeg in January and am all set for sweaters.
