There seems to be a wide range of ideas regarding safety in the city, so just trying to get the best answer I could. I travel frequently to cities and understand the basics. I%26#39;d just like to know the parts of the city that are really not meant for tourists (safety wise). We%26#39;ll be mainly in the area of the French Quarter and Garden District, so my concern would just be the vicinity in and surrounding that.
Also, I have one specific question: I%26#39;m dropping off a car at Budget on Canal (above Rampart and adjacent to Louis Armstrong Park). I saw the area above Rampart mentioned a few times, so just wondering if my wife and I will have any issue (safety...the distance is fine) walking from there down to Jackson Square.
Any info appreciated...Thanks
Unsafe areasI have been to New Orleans Twice (3rd time will be this april) on my own. The first time I stayed at LaSalle (close to that area) Seems to me that New Orleans always LOOKS alot more unsafe than it really is. That area was really busy at night.. loads of people just hanging around.. If you are nervous it is best to take a cab. But, I have never had any problem. I would suggest you take a CITY TOUR with graylines or whoever to help you get the lay of the land.. it would give you a better idea of what areas look safe to you.. and which ones do not. No city is ';safe'; and any area could be effected by crime, so always be careful.
Unsafe areasRampart isn%26#39;t the best area but I have never felt unsafe walking there.
That area is perfectly fine during the day, and as long as you aren%26#39;t dropping off your car at 3am, you shouldn%26#39;t run into any problems.
In fact, if it makes you feel any better, I go to school more or less across the street from the car rental place on Canal St, and I commute by myself (I%26#39;m a solo female).
As for the areas I wouldn%26#39;t wander alone by myself at NIGHT, I%26#39;d go with the Treme area (N. Rampart and back towards the I-10), the Central City area (boundaries: St. Charles and back towards the lake), Irish Channel in the Lower Garden District, and Upper and Lower Ninth Wards.
You shouldn%26#39;t have any problems walking in and around the French Quarter, Warehouse District, even the main strips around the Garden District, especially during the day.
As in any big city, use caution and stick to the beaten path. Common sense goes a long way! And cabs are cheap!
This is great!
Everything I%26#39;ve got planned pretty much stays out of the areas you mentioned.
The only question would be Mardi Gras World which looks like it moved down to the Lower Garden District area. Is that anywhere near where the Irish Channel that you mentioned?
Nope, Mardi Gras World is just on the other side of the Morial Convention Center. It%26#39;s in a very safe area.
Excellent...Thanks for the info. Very much appreciated.

If you want to save some walking, they also have a free shuttle from the bottom of Canal Street (at the Algiers ferry) to Mardi Gras World.
